Directions: Each of the questions given below is followed by series of options among which you have to choose the best one. You can also review your choices by clicking into answer section.

16. A runs 5/3 times as fast as B. If A gives B a start of 80 m, how far must the winning post be so that A and B might reach it at the same time?

A. 200 m

B. 300 m

C. 270 m

D. 160 m

Answer

                  Ans: Option A

       Explanation:

       Ratio of the speeds of A and B =  (5/3): 1 = 5 : 3.

       In race of 5 m, A gains 2 meter over B.

       2 m are gained by A in a race of 5 m.

       80 m will be gained by A in race of (5/2) x 80m = 200 m.

Winning post is 200 m away from the starting point.

17. A, B and C are the three contestants in one km race. If A can give B a start of 40 metres and A can give C a start of 64 metres. How many metres start can B give C?

A. None of these

B. 20 m

C. 25 m

D. 35 m

Answer

                  Ans: Option C

       Explanation:

       While A covers 1000 m, B covers (1000-40) = 960 m

       and C covers (1000-64)=936 m

i.e., when B covers 960 m, C covers 936 m

When B covers 1000 m, C covers (936960×1000) = 975 m

i.e. B can give C a start of (1000-975) = 25 m

18. A can run 800 meters in 3 minutes 20 seconds and B can cover the same distance in 2 minutes 40 seconds. Find the difference in the speeds of A and B.

A. 1 m/s

B. 1.2 m/s

C. 0.8 m/s

D. 0.5 m/s

Answer

                  Ans: Option A

       Explanation:

       Time taken by A to run 800 m = 200 seconds

       A's speed = 800/200 = 4 m/s

       Time taken by B to run 800 m = 160 s B's speed

                                                       = 800/160

                                                       = 5 m/s

       Difference in speed = 1 m/s

19. A can run 15 meters while B runs 20 meters. In a km race B beats A by

A. 200 meters

B. 100 meters

C. 220 meters

D. 250 meters

Answer

                  Ans: Option D

       Explanation:

A can run 15 meters while B runs 20 metros

A can run 15/20 meters while B runs 1 meter.

       A can run (15/20)×1000 = 750 meters while B runs 1000 meters

       i.e., in a 1 km race, B beats A by (1000-750) = 250 meters

20. A completed a 500 m race in 40 seconds and beat B by 10 seconds. Find the ratio of the speeds of A and B.

A. 4:5

B. 5:4

C. 4:1

D. 4:3

Answer

                  Ans: Option B

       Explanation:

       Time taken by A = 40 s

       Time taken by B = 50 s

     Ratio of speeds = 50:40 = 5:4
